In 1991, Komodo National Park was declared as UNESCO World Heritage Site. It consists of three larger islands (Komodo, Padar and Rinca), and 26 other smaller islands around it. Komodo National Park offers a quite breathtaking view: dry savannah vegetation, green rugged hillsides, white and pink sandy beaches in contrast with the clear blue sea water, all complement each other together in harmony to create a view unlike anything you've seen before.

Located within Lesser Sunda Island, Komodo National Park is the perfect habitat for the largest living lizard, Komodo dragon. Its size can reach 3 m, weighing up to 170 kg. Because of their unusually large size, Komodo dragon becomes the main predator who dominates the land in which they live. They are of great interest to many scientists who study the theory of evolution. Rather than dragons, they are more close to being called dinosaurs. In fact, researchers believe that Komodo dragons (Varanus Komodoensis) are relatives to the ancient dinosaurs (Allosaurus and Giganotosaurus).

The Komodo dragons are now considered as an endangered species, and you can only find them in Indonesia territory. Their life habitat is being well preserved by the government in Komodo National Park, which is also entitled as one of the World’s Nature Wonders.

Do you know? Although Komodo dragons are endemic in Indonesia, they may be originated in the Land Down Under Australia. A team of scientists has found a lot of fossils from eastern Australia. These fossils were dated from hundreds to millions of years ago and are identical to the bones of present-day Komodo dragons. The discovery of the fossils revealed that about four million years ago, Australia was home to the world's largest lizards, where they evolved, and spread to the west, and finally reached the Indonesian islands nine hundred years ago.

Komodo dragon resides in 2 of 3 larger islands in Komodo National Park: Rinca Island and Komodo Island. Komodo is located in the heart of The World’s Marine Bio-Diversity, also called the Coral Triangle. Its unique position between Pacific Ocean and India Ocean attracts all directions of currents, which brings a lot of nutrients to its marine life here, thus not only making it one the best places for diving, but also one of the most challenging ones. For experienced divers, Komodo is a perfect place to improve the diving skills against the unpredictable currents. However, it doesn’t mean beginners can’t dive here. Quite on the contrary, Komodo is also a good place for new divers and learning how to dive, as there are some easy dive sites that are good for drift dive, deep dive, underwater navigation and boat dive etc. It all depends on how the instructors and dive guides lead you there. It’s important to know the best timing jumping into each dive site, especially during full moon and new moon. Diving in Komodo can be done all year around since it is a tropical area and the water temperature is always warm (average 25°C to 28°C in Central and North Komodo while 20°C to 25°C in South Komodo). The best time to dive is between April and mid-December. During January to March, the islands starts its raining season and the sea can be quite rough sometimes.
